I would say that the benefits to the employees are increased responsibility in the work place and greater freedom of expression, they are given more chance to participate and they do not simply take orders from the person in charge. If they judge work to be more challenging, and they feel that there opinions and actions are making a difference they will become more engaged and motivated and committed to the firm (of course the is a knock on effect for both employee and employer making autonomous working groups mutually beneficial) because workers are happier so they are more productive, more innovative, more committed, and absenteeism is reduced etc. just the usual positive things.
I think the best way to answer the question is to use some electronic journals and get some quotes on the subject. Good luck with it. I did my dissertation on motivation in the manufacturing industry but that was a long time ago now but OB is such an interesting subject.
